“Girls Make STEM with Heart”, the IEEE Buenaventura spring STEM event for middle-school girls, will be on Saturday, April 25 at Isbell Middle School in Santa Paula. If you were involved in previous events, you know what a wonderful experience it is for the students and volunteers and how rewarding.

Here is some background:

  • Students can choose from a variety of workshops covering topics such as chemistry, circuits, light, sound, momentum, solar energy, and numbers.
  • We have at least three mentors per workshop. Each student was able to get plenty of attention.
At the end of the day, students get to show what they learned to their parents.
  • Isbell Middle School graciously lets us use their classrooms and food service. Each classroom is equipped with a computer projector, movable tables and chairs, and Wi-Fi connectivity.
  • Lunch and materials are provided by IEEE.
  • See the IEEE Foundation Newsletter for an excellent write-up of a past event, and our YouTube channel for a photo montage.

Planning for the event is already underway. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact us at stem2026@ieee-bv.org

Pico Robotics & IoT Curriculum for Pre-University Educators (Kick-Off Meeting)

Pico Robotics & IoT Curriculum for Pre-University Educators (Kick-Off Meeting) 150 150 ieeeeduweek

To support your role in inspiring students to pursue careers in STEM-related fields, we are pleased to offer the following program which provides a complete STEM curriculum for grade 11-12 students. This program will provide access to STEM content and the technical expertise of our IEEE members to help you integrate this content into your teaching practice. The program will be delivered from January to June 2026.

NEW! for 2026: We are excited to introduce the Sparkfun’s XRP Robot as a teaching platform for this program!

The program begins with a guided 16-week presentation of a 4-course curriculum in Robotics & IoT. Regular weekly after school Zoom meetings will help consolidate these concepts into your teaching practice.

More about the program can be seen in this video: https://youtu.be/ApaDFzaCM9Q

This training is targeted towards Grade 11/12 Computer Engineering, Electronics, or Computer Networking Teachers. And it will be delivered virtually using a Learning Management System, combined with weekly live Q/A sessions to verify mastery of the material.

Upon successful completion of learning objectives, you will be eligible to receive up to 16 PDH and 1.6 CEU credits from IEEE!

When registering, please complete all address fields, so we can ship you a robot kit and track in time for the kick-off session!

You will receive a separate email message when registration closes, providing further instructions as well as the Zoom meeting information.

For those interested in the spirit of Bayanihan, a communal Filipino word in the language of Tagalog, it is basically a term similar to John Wooden’s term of ‘TEAM SPIRIT’ of ‘WE supercedes ME’.  Dr. John Santiago when preparing his keynote-like talk realized that the IEEE Pikes Peak Section  STEM initiative of STEAM-TEAMS has the same spirt of Bayanihan.  His talk was held at the DoubleTree Hotel on 23 Aug 2025, Colorado Springs CO.  Here, Dr. Santiago introduced IEEE to over 178 attendees of the Miss Fil-AM Coronation event, hosted by the Filipino-American Community of Southern Colorado (FACSC).  Since FACSC existence in 1993, they have developed an impressive system of mentorship to sustain this community of leaders through consistent and annual cultural events in developing their youth navigating between American and Filipino cultures.  More information can be found at:  https://r5.ieee.org/pikespeak/facsc where a recordings, souvenir programs, and other documentation to help potentially work alongside this valuable and visible organization.
