We firmly believe in the necessity of educating Jordanian school girls about various engineering disciplines and encouraging them to prosper in such fields as well as broadening their understanding of engineering and connecting it to the real world, our WIE affinity group at Yarmouk University had a successful visit to the Yarmouk Model School in Irbid, where we delivered a detailed lecture to tenth-grade and junior school girls, in which we covered the following:
* Introduction to the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
* Introduction to the Women in Engineering community.
*An overview of engineering and its various specialties and fields.
* A practical experiment presentation from the field of Electronics Engineering, where the girls were allowed to experience hands-on work with basic electronic components.
Dr. Yusra Obeidat , the WIE-YU supervisor and the Chair of the WIE-Jordan , inaugurated the lecture and introduced the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the Women in Engineering community. She emphasized the importance of the Women in Engineering community in shaping women’s personalities to being STEM students and working in it. She also stressed the need to engage with the community and the world, expanding local and global knowledge networks, and provided motivational statements for the schoolgirls to choose suitable engineering specialties in the future and believe in their ability to study engineering disciplines that open doors to creativity, excellence, and innovation.
Student Shatha Badarneh from the Biomedical Engineering department spoke about engineering in general from a student’s perspective and the essential skills that engineering students should possess for success in their field. Then, a group of students discussed various engineering specialties and their importance in different fields of work. Student Lin Al-Zuhd talked about the field of bioInformatics Engineering, student Baraa Al-Sukhni discussed the field of Biomedical System Engineering, student Rama Shobash spoke about Electronics Engineering, while students Sanabel Abudiak and Aya Asfour talked about Computer Engineering. Finally, student Hala Azaizeh discussed the field of Industrial Engineering.
The interactive lecture concluded with questions from the schoolgirls about engineering, its different specialties, and opportunities for advancement and work in these fields.
In conclusion, we would like to thank the administration of the Model School, represented by the school’s principal, Sanaa Lababneh, and the academic counselor, Maisoun Jaradat, for their cooperation in coordinating and successfully conducting this event. We also extend our gratitude to everyone who contributed to the success of this activity. Stay tuned for more special events from our community that will shape goals and leave a lasting impact.
