Construction of a low cost Vibrating sample magnetometer

Construction of a low cost Vibrating sample magnetometer 150 150 ieeeeduweek

This work presents the development and assembly of a low-cost Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM), a crucial tool for measuring the magnetisation of materials, with an emphasis on magnetic powders and thin films. The VSM operates based on Faraday’s law of induction, detecting variations in magnetic flux caused by the vertical movement of the sample in a uniform magnetic field. The project was divided into two main parts: the mechanical structure, made with accessible materials, and the electronic system for automating measurements. Automation was implemented through LabVIEW software, enabling successful hysteresis curve measurements. The goal is to provide a reliable and affordable VSM for magnetic characterisation in laboratories. Preliminary results show reliable hysteresis curves obtained in a standard YIG sample
