IEEE PES Atlanta: 4 Hour Tutorial “Dry Type Air Core Reactors: Applications Overview” 150 150 ieeeeduweek

IEEE Power and Energy Society of Atlanta is pleased to present David Caverly of the Research and Development department of the Trench Electric Coil Products Division. His current role is VP Business Development for Coil Products and he will be presenting a 4-hour tutorial to discuss the following topics:

Dry Type Air Core Reactors: Applications Overview

The presentation will begin with a short description of the historical evolution of dry type air core reactor technology.  This will be followed by a brief review of air core reactor design criteria and their physical construction. From there, the focus will be to provide an overview of various air core reactor applications including current limiting, power flow control, capacitor inrush and outrush reactors, shunt reactors and power line carrier line traps. A brief description of Arc Suppression Coils (Peterson coils) is also provided along with the use of an augmented form of those for wildfire mitigation.

Following the applications overview, a review of various practical aspects of applying reactors in substations is provided.
