Topic:

Education is an integral part of building a career.  There are many different avenues one can pursue when it comes to education. According to the Census Bureau, less than half of the adults over the age of 25 in America have a college degree (Census Bureau, 2023). This would mean that most will either build a career with non-traditional education resources or settle with lower paid jobs.

A successful career in Technology highly depends on a decent level of education. Says Sam.

Computer machineries have improved twice as capable each year since the 1960’s (“Moore’s Law,” 1965).  This would mean that in the 21st century humans will experience the equivalent of 20,000 years of technological progress!

This presentation will demonstrate a few ways Sam has expanded on his education and continuously contributes to his work. The presentation will also demonstrate means by which he has applied the education to real life problems at work.

Please join us for this informal workshop and peek into how a fellow student is applying their education in the real world!

Presenter Bio:

Sam Droddy is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Software Development with a Specialization in Big Data and Analytics. Sam has worked in the steel industry since 2012 where he was hired as a shop floor employee. He worked as an operator on several machines until he took advantage of his company’s education reimbursement program.  He began school on the path to become an Electrical Engineer, but after securing a position in production analytics, he changed his degree. He now works in the raw material department where he refines processes to increase overall yield.  He also develops new tools for planning and analytics in his department. Notably, he developed a calculator utilizing Java and Microsoft Excel that calculates the most efficient way to slit steel coils given the necessary parameters. This tool is estimated to save his company approximately $500,000 each year in yield loss!

Focusing on Soft Skills Development – Liberal Arts Approaches for Teaching in the Field of ICT

Focusing on Soft Skills Development – Liberal Arts Approaches for Teaching in the Field of ICT 646 382 ieeeeduweek

Soft skills are meanwhile represented in almost all engineering curricula. Yet, the integration is often artificial even though these skills are particularly helpful already in the early stages of the studies. In this webinar, we will discuss combining concepts from art to teach complex engineering problems, already at undergraduate levels. This helps to activate soft skills such as creativity, communication, critical thinking, and teamwork to better understand complex concepts in ICT. Based on first experiences from courses taught at universities, we will discuss best practices of integrating soft skills with hard engineering facts – using art as an integrative concept. We see this as a first step towards widespread use of such a new teaching methodology for engineering-focused study programs in the EU and beyond.
