Community involvement is essential to any successful humanitarian technology and sustainable development project, but how to best incorporate stakeholders into project planning and implementation? Applying a systems thinking approach will help us take the context into account to avoid doing harm and achieve positive results. The course demonstrates how healthy community engagement can be directly connected to successful outcomes in humanitarian technology and sustainable development projects.

Why is it necessary to develop a systems thinking approach to better deal with complex situations? Implementing humanitarian technology and sustainable development projects requires a holistic analysis of existing systems (e.g., social, economic, environmental) to design solutions that work within those contexts, or to create better, more efficient systems. This course also includes a link to a Theory of Change toolkit, useful to define the steps necessary to achieve any goal.

Project assessment, monitoring, and evaluation are crucial for any humanitarian technology or sustainable development project and must be taken into account from the beginning. This course covers the importance of well-planned assessment, and why project assessment is important for the project’s success; monitoring & evaluation (M&E) best practices; how to set clear goals and strategy for M&E; relevant and useful indicators and baseline measurements; and identifying credible data sources.

In humanitarian technology projects, it is necessary to consider the project’s impact on the local community holistically, in addition to industry and business measures. It is crucial to remember any humanitarian technology project’s goal is to promote the community’s welfare, and this goal supersedes the project’s specific objectives. This courses focuses on the early stages of project design, and specifically on sustainable and humanitarian technology practices in project management.
